Kamayan

ABOUT

My first (and only) time having Filipino food was at the Kamayan pop-up at Minero in Ponce City Market. This particular pop-up was a collaboration between Kamayan & Minero. Everything tasted great - a lot of pineapple/soy flavor. There were also a good variety of dishes to choose from. I also didn’t find anything overly spicy.

While Kamayan hosts several types of pop-ups their most popular ones are the “family-style” pop-ups where all the food is served on a giant banana leaf and everyone eats from there. Unfortunately, I haven’t been to one of those, because most of the items are made with pork, which I don’t eat.

I also had a chance to taste one of their dishes at the recent (May 2019) Lazy Betty pop-up involving seven pop-up chefs. Again the item was pork-based (sisig - a traditional street food), so instead our dish was made with cauliflower. This time I did feel the spice in the dish and loved the addition of quail eggs. I haven’t had flavors like that before.

I look forward to trying future pop-ups. In particular, I want to get my hand on the Ube Flan cake!

FAVORITES

My favorite items from the pop-up were the salsa tasting, the shrimp with garlic rice in a pineapple boat & the Ube Churros! The ube churros were insanely delicious. The coconut ube dip is something that should be bottled and sold.
