Chow Club - Burmese Edition

ABOUT

Chow Club hosts different international pop-ups almost every month in Atlanta. The chefs that participate are either home cooks or looking to enter the culinary and/or pop-up scene. Chef Parnass of Talat Market even cooked at Chow Club once.

I attended the Burmese pop-up led by Chef Fatima Virani (my husband’s aunt, therefore my aunt). Chef Fatima delivered great flavors and it was cool to see other people trying Burmese food for the first time. My father-in-law was born and raised in Burma, so my husband’s side of the family is very familiar with the cuisine! By default, I think I have a pretty good sense of it as well! Burmese food I would say is a fusion of Thai & Indian food, with a lot of coconut & (some) fish flavor. The most well-known dish is Khao Soi (spelled several different ways), which was the star of the night.

How does Chow Club work? Well, we paid $50 per person and received five plated courses. Everything was individually plated (i.e., not family style), but I think that varies depending on the particular pop-up. It’s a very homey/intimate setting. Don’t expect fancy plates and silverware or waiter/waitress service (you can bring your own drinks). It’s also informative - you learn about the cuisine and meet new people at the same time. Basically, an underground supper club. The Burmese one had a ton of interest, I think there were 50 - 60 people there for two consecutive nights, but sometimes there are less, so just depends on the cuisine.

FAVORITES

My favorite dishes were the budijo (squash fritters) and of course the Khao Soi (coconut curry noodle soup)!
