12 Atlanta Biscuits Worth the Carbs
I’ve always liked biscuits (who doesn’t) but for some reason, I had an obsession with them in 2020. Biscuits are the perfect vessel for a breakfast sandwich but are also great with some homemade jam and bougie butter.
The first three spots on the list are my current favorites and the remaining biscuits are in alphabetical order. This is not a comprehensive list, just places I’ve tried in the past year or two. I will never, NEVER, include a spot I haven’t tried. Click on the name or scroll through and read about all 12.
Bread is Good || Redbird || The Grand at Poor Hendrix || Bomb Biscuits || Butterly Biscuits || Buttermilk Kitchen || Hen Mother Cookhouse || Lazy Betty || Star Provisions || Southern Belle || The Chastain || The Plate Sale
And if these 12 spots aren’t enough for you, here are the other places on my list to explore (in alphabetical order). I recognize a lot of these are older Atlanta staples, don’t hate me for taking so long to try them!
Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit in the Virginia Highlands (I know it’s a chain but I need to understand why everyone is so obsessed)
Hell Yeah Gluten Free in Inman Park for the Breakfast Biscuit Sammie
Home Grown in Reynoldstown for their Comfy Chicken Biscuit (I haven’t had it in 5 years)
Java Jive in Midtown for their Plain Biscuit (recommended by my friend Sonya)
Pare Baked Goods Pop-Up for their Ube Biscuits
The Rising Son in Avondale Estates for their Plain Biscuit (recommended by my friend Sweta)
As I’ve mentioned time and time again, Sarah Dodge of Bread is Good is the expert in all things bread and honestly just all baked goods. Her biscuits come in at the top of my list for a reason. I like my biscuits, flaky, buttery, and with a crispy exterior. That is exactly what Sarah delivers. The picture above is from the good old days of sit-down pop-ups but don’t worry she still sells them frozen so you can make them at home! When we ordered them at home, we paired them with soft scrambled eggs and Banner Butter. And if you are lucky, you may even get fresh hot ones depending on the menu for the week.
Sarah’s bread, biscuit, bagels, cinnamon rolls, and assorted pastry boxes go on sale Fridays at 10 am (subject to change) for delivery or pick-up the following week. They always sell out, so I would recommend you set a reminder and follow her Instagram account to stay updated for changes.
Last Ordered: August 2020
Where: Delivery is available for different parts of ITP (but not all). Pick-up at the moment is in Inman Park at the corner of Elizabeth St & Bernina Ave.
When: Delivery and Pick-Up days vary (read all of the instructions on the ordering tab, before you place your order).
Other: Visit Sarah’s Instagram highlights for instructions on how to reheat the biscuits. In a nutshell, heat the oven to 400F - 415F. Brush frozen biscuits with melted butter. Bake for eight minutes, then rotate the tray. Bake for another eight minutes. It may need more or less time depending on how hot your oven gets. Brushing butter on top is a crucial step!
Redbird’s brunch (which I tried in December of 2019) has been on hiatus since the pandemic, but in late September of 2020, they started Biscuit Saturdays! From 11 - 3 pm (or sold out) you can get plain biscuits or biscuit sandwiches. I don’t eat a lot of chicken anymore since my husband became a pescatarian but the “Little Birdy” was something I would go back for! The biscuit was crispy and buttery and paired well with the fried chicken and chili maple glaze. So good that a Yellowjacket wouldn’t leave us alone (true story)!
While most of the biscuit options have remained the same since opening they have been introducing weekly specials. There are plenty of options for both meat-eaters and vegetarians. They also set up a full bar outdoors, including drip coffee, to pair with your biscuits. Definitely add this to your weekend brunch rotation.
Last Ordered: October 2020
Where: West Midtown
When: Saturdays only from 11 am - 2 pm (or sold out) but also on Sundays starting 1/24!
Other: Outdoor patio seating available for Redbird customers. Plenty of space to spread out and be more than six feet from other people. Order in person at their take-out window. They don’t accept mobile pay but had a jar of “sanitized pens”.
You know those memes about places that are harder to get into than the Capitol? Well, scoring a biscuit from The Grand by Poor Hendrix, is more difficult than storming the capital. This pop-up at Poor Hendrix only happens once a month (on Sundays) and is either announced the day before or even the day of. I think it sold out in under an hour last time, so I consider myself lucky!
They have a few options but we ordered the scrambled eggs + cheddar biscuit and a plain one with their homemade jam. It was buttery, soft, but still had the crunchy exterior that I like in a biscuit. The salt level was perfect and their sorghum butter added another layer of flavor. The eggs were soft and creamy. Basically, the perfect biscuit.
You can’t preorder, so you will have to get in line when they open (usually 8 am). However, they are very safe with Covid procedures. There are separate windows for ordering versus pick-up and there is plenty of space to spread out while you are waiting for your biscuit (usually within 15 minutes of ordering). You can also go across the street and grab some coffee or The Chai Box chai latte from Perc Coffee while you wait!
Last Ordered: December 2020
Where: East Lake
When: One random Sunday a month from 8 am - sold out.
Other: Although Poor Hendrix has an outdoor patio, I don’t remember it being open for biscuits; however, you could always grab a coffee across the street and eat at Perc’s tables.
In January of 2020, I finally got to try Bomb Biscuits which is a pop-up by Erika Council of Southern Soufflé (an Atlanta catering service). We ordered a fried chicken biscuit and loved the heat and flavor from the chicken. Luckily they shifted gears during the pandemic to a full delivery service with occasional pop-ups throughout the city (mainly in Summerhill). They even deliver out-of-state now!
The pictured biscuits are delivered with instructions for cooking and/or reheating and are served with seasonal jams that change frequently. I like that the biscuits are small and not too filling so you don’t have to feel guilty about eating too many! These are perfect if you really don’t want to leave the house and just want to enjoy some biscuits in your pajamas with a cup of chai or coffee.
Last Ordered: July 2020
Where: Delivery
When: Delivery happens on Fridays and Saturdays
Other: They also offer a few other items like cinnamon buns! Their delivery service may have changed by now, but it was really accurate. You get a two-hour window but then they end up texting you a shorter one on the day of.
Butterly Biscuits is a family business started by a mom and son duo. They have been around for over a year now and have held pop-ups at The MET in Adair Park and Grant Park Farmers Market. The menu changes weekly and consists of a mix of sweet and savory biscuit options.
While I’m used to a biscuit having more of a crispy exterior, I actually liked the soft, crumbly, buttery nature of this biscuit. This is going to sound very strange, especially since I haven’t had one in 15+ years. The biscuits are a much, much, much better version of the McDonald’s biscuit most of us probably grew up eating. While they can be made into sandwiches, I paired mine with their jam and also tried the cinnamon roll spread, which ended up being my favorite!
Last Ordered: June 2020
Where: Grant Park Farmer’s Market (at Eventide Brewing next to The Beacon)
When: 8 am - 1 pm every Sunday
Other: Occasionally pre-orders are accepted, but with long lines they often only take walk-ups.
Biscuits larger than your face and served with pepper jelly. That’s all you need to know to convince you to try Buttermilk Kitchen. They are one of the most well-known spots in Atlanta for biscuits and now even sell the biscuit mix and pepper jelly to make and enjoy at home. Although, I haven’t been during the pandemic I’ve been following their Instagram account and they seem to be taking all of the precautions and offer curbside pick-up.
I also just read yesterday that they will be opening up a biscuit only pop-up, Milkdrop, located directly behind the current Buttermilk location!
Last Ordered: March 2019
Where: Buckhead
When: Tuesday - Thursday | 8am - 2pm & Friday - Sunday | 8am - 3pm
Other: Check out their FAQs for more on parking, etc. if you plan to dine-in.
For a larger than life biscuit sandwich or just any brunch dish, head to Hen Mother Cookhouse. Pimento cheese, fried chicken, and a sweet-chili glaze sandwiched inside a biscuit, how much more indulgent could it get? If you can’t tell from the photo this is a very filling sandwich. I don’t actually recall the texture of the biscuits since it’s been a while, but the three of us that tried the sandwich had a “WOW” moment.
Last Ordered: September 2019 (but I’ve been back to Hen Mother Cookhouse a few times since then)
Where: Johns Creek
When: Breakfast 7-2; Lunch 11-2 Tuesday-Friday || Brunch all day 7:30-2:30 Saturday & Sunday...They have a separate weekday versus weekend menu, so make sure you look at the right one.
Other: Call to place your order and pull-up Curbside (order 15-25 minutes before you want to eat). A staff member will walk out to get your name and if your order is not ready you will be asked to park and they will bring it to you.
In a blog post from May 2019, I wrote the following. “Possibly the B E S T biscuits in Atlanta. They had the perfect buttery/crispy texture, but the star was the kumquat butter, so velvety and creamy.” One of the perks of doing a tasting menu at Lazy Betty is getting to have one of their addicting biscuits. The butter pairing changes seasonally, but I’m sure whatever they come up with is delicious. The biscuits are quite petite, but you can ask for more. They even have an add-on option to have your biscuits with caviar!
Last Ordered: May 2019
Where: Candler Park
When: For Seated Service - Tuesday - Thursday & Sunday 6 - 8:30 pm | Friday - Saturday 5:30 - 9 pm
Other: While you can’t purchase the biscuits solo, you can order a five-course tasting menu for take-out (via Toast) or dine in for a 4, 7, or 10-course menu at one of their socially distant tables on their patio or in their dining room.
Southern Belle is currently on winter break but when they are back you can get a big stack of biscuits during their Sunday brunch. These biscuits lasted for days. They were big, filling, and paired well with the two different jams and butter. What doesn’t Southern Belle do well? If you really want the full experience, try them out for dinner!
Last Ordered: August 2020
Where: Poncey Highlands
When: Sundays only but they are currently on winter break
Other: For take-out, you just walk up to the front and give your name. For dine-in, the outdoor seating is spread out nicely. They also installed new filters for indoor seating. And they create a “red” & “green” card system which allows the customer to signal when it’s ok for the server to come over or not.
So it’s been a year since I’ve had this chicken biscuit from Star Provisions. But the three times that I had it, it didn’t dissapoint. In looking at recent pictures of this biscuit, it seems like they changed it, but the one I had was on the thinner side and complimented the chicken really well. The biscuit didn’t overwhelm the sandwich which I liked. Pro-Tip: Ask for some Mike’s Hot Honey to drizzle on your biscuit!
While not a biscuit, my favorite thing to get from Star Provisions is the chia seed pudding!
Last Ordered: December 2019
Where: West Midtown
When: Tuesday - Saturday 8 am - 4 pm | Sunday 9 am - 2 pm
Other: You can place an order for Curbside pick-up. The ordering platform is a little strange but it works. Gratuity is a menu item, so make sure you add that to your cart! When you arrive at Star Provisions just park anywhere, call them and tell them you are here, your car details and they will bring it to you.
I love when biscuits come out warm! At The Chastain, you get just that, warm biscuits served with honey butter or in breakfast sandwich form. They had a nice crumbly texture and a lightly crispy exterior. I wish the honey butter was more spreadable at the time of consumption, but if you are taking it to eat at home, then it won’t be an issue for you! And although not a biscuit, I really enjoyed their chocolate croissant!
The Chastain took over the space of the former Horseradish Grill. They have a cafe during the morning/afternoon and dinner in the evening. Their outdoor seating is massive. There are around 4 - 5 distinct areas for seating that likely seats 75+ people. I went on opening week, so it was notably busy. I would recommend going at an odd hour or on a weekday although the people of Chastain Park seem to be there at all hours of the day!
Last Ordered: November 2020
Where: Chastain Park
When: Monday - Saturday 7 am - 2 pm (for their cafe)
Other: There is more outdoor seating than you can imagine (for Atlanta standards). We waited in line 30+ minutes to order, so pick a weekday at an odd time to avoid the crowds.
The Plate Sale is a Southern-American pop-up operating out of Athens, GA. I first tried their food at a Lazy Betty pop-up and was really impressed with their duck and turnip puree dish, so when I heard they were preparing biscuits and “puffy” pancakes in Athens, we had to make a summer day trip back in July of 2020!
Their biscuits are served with a seasonal jam and occasionally in sandwich form. I enjoyed the crispy exterior and that they were more square in nature. They post their menu on Instagram every day and also notate if they are taking the day off, so keep checking before you make the drive! And don’t forget to order the puffy pancake!
Last Ordered: July 2020
Where: Athens, GA at Hendershot’s Coffee
When: Tuesdays - Saturdays, 9 am - 5 pm
Other: You can order in person or in advance on Hendershot’s Coffee’s website. Just look for “The Plate Sale” drop-down. I would order around 20 - 30 minutes before your desired pick-up time. The pancake takes 10-15 minutes to be prepared. When you arrive, just walk up to the green garage door and give your name (if the door isn’t open, ring the doorbell). FYI…there are a few parallel spots for free 15-minute parking, otherwise, it’s paid parking via Park Mobile.
