Atlanta Quarantine Eats Week 1
Welcome to Week 1 (6/19 - 6/21) of Quarantine Eats.
I don’t know about you, but the one thing keeping Nizar and I sane during quarantine is getting take out. So, every week I will share my weekend take-out adventures in the hopes that it will inspire some of you to support different local restaurants & pop-ups impacted by Covid-19 along with supporting the many black-owned businesses in Atlanta.
Our goal is to try one or two black-owned restaurants/pop-ups every week and/or purchase from a place that is donating a portion of their proceeds in the fight towards racial justice. I recognize that this alone is not enough in the fight towards racial justice but this is one direct way I know I can publicly help elevate black voices. Lastly, make sure to share your take-out photos to social media and spread the word - you don’t have to be a food blogger to do that! Thanks for coming to my ZD Talk!
weekend summary
Friday, June 19th
Morning Coffee
Perc Coffee is a Savannah-based roaster that will be opening up a location in Atlanta (East Lake) this August featuring Sarah Dodge’s bread and breakfast items. In the meantime, they have been popping up with Sarah Dodge for individual coffee drinks and coffee bean sales at her Friday pop-ups at Ammazza Edgewood (which will be ending soon).
We loved their Madagascar Vanilla Bean Latte. My biggest pet peeve is when vanilla in lattes taste artificial but this was beyond satisfying! And the latte overall was very smooth. Follow Perc on Instagram to stay up to date on their opening date. They are having a pop-up with Sarah Dodge at their new location on July 4th!
Afternoon Coffee
Gilly Brew Bar held a pop-up on Juneteenth, celebrating the announcement of their new location in Castleberry Hills at Peters Street Station. While this location won’t officially be open until later this year, I highly recommend checking out their spot in Stone Mountain. Along with your traditional espresso-based drinks, Gilly offers seasonal elixirs that change quarterly. There is always something new and exciting!
This was my third time visiting Gilly and it did not disappoint. My favorite drink of the moment is the Brooklyn Moss (Ginger Beer + Matcha) but I also love their lavender latte. This is also a #blackownedbusiness.
Dinner
The team behind Supremo must be psychics! Why? Because Supremo was built for this pandemic! If you haven’t been yet, Supremo is a takeaway taco stand in Reynoldstown. Even before the pandemic started, all meals were served in to-go containers. So you can easily pop open the trunk of your car, social distance and enjoy your meal in their parking lot.
Why is this different than any other taco place in Atlanta? In my opinion, it’s the quality, execution and elevated taste. Everything is flavorful and I particularly love their two-blend tortillas. My favorites include the lamb barbacoa taco, carne asada taco, shrimp aguachile tostada, the fried quesadilla and the churros!

Morning Breakfast & Coffee
What can I say other than these Butterly Biscuits are heavenly. If you are someone who enjoys a softer and buttery biscuit, then this one is for you. Butterly Biscuits is a family-owned pop-up currently operating out of the MET Atlanta on Wednesday and Saturday mornings and occasionally at Grant Park Farmer’s Market on Sundays. This is also a #blackownedbusiness.
They have several sweet and savory options to choose from. We enjoyed both the strawberry jam and cinnamon roll biscuits and look forward to trying some of the savory options next time (eggs, smoked salmon, etc.). They reserve a limited amount of biscuits for pre-order (curbside pick-up) but you can also order straight from The Window, which also serves regular and Latin-inspired coffee. Grab a Cortadito or Cafe con Leche while you wait for your biscuits!
FYI - The Window has different pop-ups throughout the week, one of them serve pupusas, which is a thick griddlecake or flatbread.
Sunday, June 21st
breakfast / dessert
The Southern Restaurants for Racial Justice of Atlanta, led by Restauranteurs & Chefs Anne Quatrano (of the Star Provisions Group) and Sarah O’Brien (of Little Tart Bakeshop) organized a bake sale, donating all proceeds to Color of Change. Color of Change “leads campaigns that build real power for Black communities”. I believe there were around 50 restaurants that donated pastries which customers pre-purchased for $5 a box. Upon arriving we were given tokens which we could cash-in, in exchange for our baked good of choice. Again, 100% of the proceeds went to charity, which means all of the restaurants offered their pastries up as a donation, so thank you to them! This Group plans to do more events throughout the year, so stay tuned!
So what did I end up getting?
Coconut Yuzu Cupcake from Tiny Lou’s
Whoopie Pie with Salted Caramel Filling from Kimball House
Hazelnut Roulade from Lazy Betty
Parmigiano Puff Pastry from Staplehouse
Banana Date Muffin from Hen Mother Cookhouse
lunch / dinner
I love Mediterranean food so was beyond excited that Delbar opened around the corner from my apartment. I originally thought Delbar only offered Persian food but upon a closer look at their menu and specials, you can find food from Turkey and other countries as well. They opened right in the middle of the pandemic, so I haven’t been able to dine in, but their take-out has been delicious.
Their portions and pricing are very generous. In addition to a la carte items, they have family-style meals feeding 2 or 4 people. A meal for two lasted us lunch, dinner and most of our lunch the following day. My favorite dishes from the two times I have been included the heirloom tomato salad, kashk badenjoon (fried eggplant dip), adana kebab, falafels, za’atar fries, polo sefid (crispy plain rice), adas polo (rice with lentils & raisins) and labneh dip! Order on their website for easy curbside pick-up!
Leave me a comment below if you end up trying any of these places!
